Port Tracker - A Port Monitoring Service That Alerts About Potential Port Delays

Port Tracker is a port monitoring service. It uses a device that looks like an automobile gas gauge. this device is called a congestometer. It is used to alert shippers about potential ship delays. Global Insight’s Port Tracker program is a subscription service that monitors rail and truck capacity and inbound container volume, that moves into and out of ports. It also looks at labor conditions and such other factors that may affect cargo movement. During the ill-starred 2004 holiday shipping season, ship logjams occurred. These caused protracted freight backups at U.S. ports, after which the National Retail Federation, commissioned the services of Global Insight, to warn its members of any impending problems. DCvelociy.com reports:

Early warning may give shippers peace of mind, but it’s no guarantee of trouble-free shipping. "As we must every year, we can expect some shocks to the system," Bingham says, citing the 2005 natural disasters and fuel price spikes as examples.
