The Seven S’s of Material Handling
The Focal factors for effective Material Handling can be spelt with seven S’s. The first ‘S’ is "Sort" and talks about sorting and elimination of all wastes in the work area. The second ‘S’ stands for ‘Set in Order’ which implies that you must organize all that remains in the work areas. The third ‘S’ is for ‘Shine’ which means that you must keep everything clean. "Standardize" is the fourth ‘S’ and it talks about scheduled cleaning and maintenance. Next comes ‘Sustain’ that is, you must make this system a way of life. "Spirit" is the sixth ‘S’ which effectively means that you must inculcate a spirit so as to inspire respect for the workplace environment among all the employees.
