Introduction to Bulk Material Handling
With a topic as oft misunderstood as Material Handling, the only proper way to begin a blog on material handling is to explain what it is. So without further ado:
Material Handling, or more specifically bulk material handling refers to an engineering field which focuses on the design of equipment used for transporting materials of large quantities in an efficient manner. It is, in effect, the study and creation of products which help us move stuff.
In the world of material handling, you will see names of equipment like hoppers, stackers, reclaimers, conveyers, silos and stockpiles show up frequently. These are just some of the many types of equipment which provide the backbone of material handling systems. These systems, in turn, form an integral part of many industries including farming and mining.
Material handling, while certainly a niche industry, is one of the most innovative and yes exciting areas of both industrial engineering a design in the world today. I hope you will stick with us as we cover the many aspects of the field.
